ARLINGTON, VA —  Thousands of DoDEA students worldwide and schools across the United States will join in celebrating the 11th annual Read Across America Day in March.

Since 1997, Read Across America has celebrated reading and the ongoing daily efforts to build a nation of readers. Read Across America falls on the 10rth birthday of beloved children's author Dr. Seuss. Read Across America is a nationwide celebration that focuses attention on how important it is to motivate children to read as well as help them master basic reading skills. It was first launched in 1997 by the National Education Association (NEA).

Every year, the celebration is observed on March 2, the birthday of Dr. Seuss. Dr. Seuss' love of learning and use of rhyme makes his books some of the most relied on for teaching young children the skills they need to become successful readers.

Read Across America not only provides an opportunity to emphasize and foster an appreciation for reading, but it also gives DoDEA Schools worldwide the chance to come together and observe a common celebration, despite the geographical dispersion of students and teachers.

In addition to bridging geographical barriers, Read Across America transcends the age continuum for students. The program is for students for all ages from pre-kindergarten through high school.
