Marilyn Brown named director of ORNL's Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Program
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Feb. 9, 2001 — Dr. Bill Madia, director of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), today announced the appointment of Dr. Marilyn A. Brown as director of ORNL'S Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy Program. Since 1994, she has been deputy director of ORNL's $110 million program to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable energy technologies. Her appointment is effective on April 2.
"Dr. Brown has established an international reputation in energy research. She is a tremendous asset to the Laboratory," Madia said.
Dr. Brown was named to the position being vacated by Anthony (Tony) Schaffhauser who has accepted the position of director of the Distributed Energy Resources Center at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colo.
Madia said losing Schaffhauser brings mixed emotions. "We hate to lose Tony, but I know Tony will bring us a closer relationship with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory," Madia said.
In addition to her management responsibilities, Dr. Brown conducts research on issues surrounding the commercialization of new energy and environmental technologies and the potential for U.S. carbon emission reductions. Prior to coming to ORNL in 1984, she was a tenured associate professor in the Department of Geography at the University of Illinois. In addition to teaching graduate and undergraduate seminars on technological change, resource geography, and statistical analysis and modeling, she received two NSF grants and funding from other sources to support her research on the diffusion of energy innovations.
Dr. Brown received a Ph.D. in geography from Ohio State University where she was a University Fellow. She was awarded a masters degree in resource planning from the University of Massachusetts, and a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science (with a minor in mathematics) from Rutgers University.
Dr. Brown has authored more than 140 publications and has received awards for her research from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy, the Lockheed Martin Corp., the Association of American Geographers, the Technology Transfer Society and the Association of Women in Science. She sits on the boards of several energy and environmental organizations, including the Environmental Protection Agency's Board of Scientific Counselors and the Alliance to Save Energy. She has served on advisory committees to the National Science Foundation, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the University of Tennessee and the Iowa Energy Center. She is currently on the editorial boards of the Journal of Technology Transfer and Applied Geographic Studies.
