OAK RIDGE, Tenn., June 23, 2009 — University of Tennessee head football coach Lane Kiffin helped the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory kick off its 2009 United Way campaign with a rally in front of hundreds of employees.

Laboratory Director Thom Mason urged ORNL staff to continue their commitment as key contributors to the United Way in East Tennessee.

"Particularly now with the economy in the state it is and the impact it has on charitable giving - and more importantly the impact it has on need - I think it is essential that we step up once again this year and do what we can to help out our friends and neighbors," Mason said.

The Laboratory's United Way campaign goal is $925,000, but Mason hopes to surpass that total.

"We cracked $1 million for the first time last year," Mason said. "I hope we can do that again this year. We'll see how it goes."

ORNL is managed by UT-Battelle for the Department of Energy.
