Spallation Neutron Source, Knight/Jacobs mark successful partnership

OAK RIDGE, Tenn., May 6, 2005 — Officials of Oak Ridge National Laboratory's Spallation Neutron Source and Knight/Jacobs Joint Venture, the SNS project's prime construction contractor, marked the successful completion of Knight/Jacobs' role in the Department of Energy project in a Friday afternoon ceremony.

Knight/Jacobs Joint Venture was formed in 1998 to submit a proposal to ORNL and DOE for the SNS's architect-engineer and construction manager work. The firm was awarded the contract in the fall of 1998, during the early days of the project. Construction on the state-of-the-art neutron facility began in late 1999.

The SNS, funded by DOE's Office of Science, is on schedule to open next year as the world's leading facility for neutron research.

"Knight/Jacobs' role in the design and construction of the SNS buildings has been a critical element in the success of this construction project," said SNS Associate Laboratory Director Thom Mason. "They have delivered against an aggressive schedule with exemplary safety performance."

During the term of the construction project, Knight/Jacobs had peak numbers of nearly 700 trade workers and 80 architects and engineers working on the facilities. The crews charted more than 4 million work hours without a lost workday. Knight/Jacobs' work represented $300 million of the project's overall $1.4 billion cost.

"Knight/Jacobs' record of achievement during the SNS construction phase underscores the extraordinarily productive partnerships that can be achieved between DOE, ORNL, labor and industry," said Daniel Quinn, Knight/Jacobs project manager for the SNS.

The partnership has been recognized externally for excellence. In 2004, the SNS shared the Tennessee Labor-Management Conference's (TLMC) Award of Excellence with Knight/Jacobs and its subcontractors and with the Knoxville Building and Construction Trades Council, for the project's achievements in safety, training, diversity and community service.

A second TLMC honor, the Horizon Award, recognized the SNS labor-management team's community service in renovating CALM House, a hospitality house that serves a local hospital.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a multiprogram laboratory managed for the Department of Energy by UT-Battelle.
