Through this initiative, the Centers of Innovation for Science, Technology, and Peacebuilding/Media, Conflict and Peacebuilding explore ways to utilize quantitative and analytical tools to map online discourse and content in USIP’s priority conflict areas.

USIP identifies and applies best practices in seven topical areas whose issues cross each phase of conflict through this series of Centers.

The Iran Working Group regularly convenes specialists from the D.C. policy community, a number of research projects, and an exchange program between U.S. and Iranian religious leaders

Building upon our emergency response to the war in Lebanon between Israel and Hezbollah, USIP established a working group to focus on Lebanon's internal issues and how they will affect long-term reconstruction. The working group facilitates interaction between experts on Lebanon and government officials, and designs reconstruction efforts in a manner to prevent conflict within Lebanon and across its borders.

Through a series of summits to highlight the expanding power of today’s media to transform public diplomacy and promote peaceful international relations, the Center has brought together a variety of public diplomacy thinkers and media stakeholders. These events have been hosted by influential public figures such as Ted Koppel and Queen Noor.

This Center of Innovation focuses on harnessing the power of the media for peacebuilding, and on developing new strategies for countering the abuse of media during conflict.

The Center of Innovation for Media, Conflict, and Peacebuilding has been active in Iraq since 2009. By working with USIP staff in Baghdad and Iraqi media partners, the Center continues to develop innovative ways to use media as a peacebuilding tool.  Currently, the Center is developing self-regulatory tools to combat media incitement to violence and engaging Iraqi youth through peace media to empower them to bring positive change to their societies.

This initiative, which drew to a close in 2009, was designed to help to mobilize moderates, marginalize militants, and bridge the U.S./Muslim-world divide.

Mitigating incitement to violence in Iraq’s politicized media landscape has been a primary goal of USIP since 2009.  Preventing Media Incitement to Violence in Iraq is aimed at granting Iraqi media stakeholders in both government and civil society ownership of self-regulatory tools so that they can effectively counter media incitement in their own organizations.  Ongoing content analysis is conducted to inform the development and application of these tools.
