Introduction and Resources

This directory serves to insure the public's knowledge of and access to the most current information on today's educational opportunities in sustainable agriculture. The Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) at the National Agricultural Library has published the directory on a regular basis since December 1988.

Stephanie Ritchie, AFSIC Librarian, provided invaluable contributions to the 20th edition. AFSIC acknowledges and appreciates the Sustainable Agriculture Education Association's assistance with this update.

We make additions and changes to Educational and Training Opportunities in Sustainable Agriculture throughout the year. We invite and appreciate comments or corrections, and names of institutions or organizations not listed here. Contact Becky Thompson to add an institution or provide updates.

The U.S. institutions in this directory were selected based on their curricula or programs offering curricula, degrees, education and training, or information in organic, alternative, or sustainable agriculture. Inclusion of an institution does not imply a recommendation by AFSIC. A forthcoming supplement to this directory will identify international institutions that offer training in sustainable agriculture.

SAEA strives to advance the field of sustainable agriculture education and serve its members by producing professional conferences and resources. The Sustainable Agriculture Education Materials (SAEM) digital library is a searchable database of curriculum and other education resources on sustainable agriculture.

The 2012 Organic Land Grant Assessment is a national assessment of research, education and outreach programs in the federally funded Land Grant system ranked the level of organic activity at each institution. Criteria included: certified organic research land; offering a degree (major/minor) or certificate in organic agriculture; providing Extension resources on organic agriculture; operating a student organic or sustainable farm: and other criteria.
