Wonders of the Age: Masterpieces of Early Safavid Painting, 1501-1576

December 16, 1979-March 2, 1980

Overview: 85 miniatures from 12 lenders and anonymous sources were assembled by Stuart Cary Welch, curator of Muslim and Hindu painting at the Fogg Art Museum, Harvard Unversity. Gaillard Ravenel and Mark Leithauser designed the exhibition and Gordon Anson designed the lighting for the National Gallery. The exhibition was supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, John Goelet, and an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Attendance: 96,131 (75 days)

Location: East Building, Ground Floor, Northeast, Pod I (2,000 sq. ft.)
