Nation’s Forests and Soils Store Equivalent of 50 Years of U.S. CO2 Emissions
The first phase of a groundbreaking national assessment estimates that U.S. forests and soils could remove additional quantities of carbon dioxide (CO2) from the atmosphere as a means to mitigate climate change.
The lower 48 states in the U.S. hypothetically have the potential to store an additional 3-7 billion metric tons of carbon in forests, if agricultural lands were to be used for planting forests. This potential is equivalent to 2 to 4 years of America’s current CO2 emissions from burning fossil fuels .
Salazar Announces MMS Plan to Establish Atlantic Renewable Energy Office
COPENHAGEN – Today, as he toured the Middelgrunden wind farm near Copenhagen Denmark, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar announced that the Minerals Management Service (MMS) will establish a new regional office in 2010 to support renewable energy development on the Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) off the Atlantic seaboard.

2010 Conference on the Environment
Call for Abstracts
The 2010 Conference on the Environment is scheduled for April 26-30, 2010, in Portland, Oregon. The Conference will be sponsored by the Office of Environmental Policy and Compliance and hosted by the National Park Service. The Conference will be a platform for addressing important environmental issues including greenhouse gas management, compliance, energy, transportation and facilities management; identifying opportunities for sharing scarce resources devoted to solving environmental problems; and receiving training in environmental subject areas.
The Call for Abstracts for the Conference is now available, and abstracts may be submitted online.
Salazar Hosts White House Clean Energy Economy Forum on Renewable Energy, Job Creation, and Climate Impact and Adaptation
Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar today hosted a Clean Energy Economy Forum with stakeholders from 39 states across the country at the Eisenhower Executive Office Building. Deputy Secretary David Hayes and other top Department of the Interior officials spoke about the importance of renewable energy and job creation, climate impact and adaptation, and efforts to support and maintain the treasured landscapes of America in the emerging clean energy economy.
Secretarial Order Addresses Climate Change Impacts on U.S. Lands and Oceans
On September 14, 2009, Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar launched the Department of the Interior's first-ever coordinated strategy to address current and future impacts of climate change on America's land, water, ocean, fish, wildlife, and cultural resources.
"Across the country, Americans are experiencing first-hand the impacts of climate change, from growing pressure on water supplies to more intense droughts and fires to rampant bark beetle infestations," said Salazar. "Because Interior manages one-fifth of our nation's landmass and 1.7 billion acres on the Outer Continental Shelf it is imperative that we tackle these impacts of a failed and outdated energy policy. This secretarial order is another milestone in our continuing effort to change how Interior does business to respond to the energy and climate challenges of our time."
