Thumbnail preview ANNOTATION: Factors associated with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are examined. NSSI “may be defined as the deliberate destruction of body tissue without suicidal intent and for purposes not socially sanctioned and may include behaviours such as cutting, ligature use, burning, hitting, swallowing sharp or indigestible objects, inserting and removing objects, and head banging” (p. iii). Results and related discussion presented in this report surround: motivations for engaging in NSSI; emotions experienced prior and after NSSI; precipitating events; effect of substance abuse on NSSI; and methods of coping—alternatives to NSSI.
