Time-lapse video: Space shuttle Endeavour’s trek across L.A.
The space shuttle Endeavour made its final journey last weekend, traveling 12-miles from Los Angeles International Airport, through Inglewood, to the California Science Center in Exposition Park.
The retired orbiter was carried through city streets atop a special transporter. Throngs of people lined the route as it shimmied around trees, utility poles and other obstacles.

It had arrived in Los Angeles on a Boeing 747 on Sept. 20 and kept in LAX’s United Airlines hangar as it was prepared for the crosstown trip.
“Mission 26″ as it was dubbed because of the spacecraft’s 25 flight missions for NASA started just before midnight Thursday and finished Sunday afternoon, more than 16 hours late.
Its final journey was slowed by unexpected maintenance issues and last-minute maneuvers to avoid obstacles like trees and utility poles. The 85-ton orbiter survived the trip with nary a scratch.

Nicely done timelapse of the travel. The music was great, would be nice to know where / which artists you picked for these videos.
Overall it was an amazing 3 days for the Space Shuttle and I'm glad it made it to its final home in one pice. Would like to have seen more footage of her travel through Crenshaw and MLK though. The joy on the ground and how awesome a job they did moving her through the neighborhood was stunning example of excellence and skill at its best.

I saw this amazing piece of equipment flying over four times – yes, 4 times while I was making my destination to Aviation Blvd. via bus. The first time was the most awe inspiring time and I froze. The 2 fighter jets on either side, with this massive 747 and Endeavor on top – the whole package was chilling. I wish I had seen the Endeavor crossing the streets of LA, but you, Brian, gave me chills again with this beautiful editing job. Eleni, thank you for that beautiful piece of music as well. Thank you so much!

Great video… however it would have looked much better in Houston! Why CA even got a shuttle is unbelievable. Considering all the hard work and dedication to the Space Program by the Houston community… its total shame that the shuttle's final resting place wasn't at NASA JSC! What a sham!

Great coverage. The only sad part of the story is that all the effort expended by the cast and crew of the "festival celebration" including Debbie Allen, Lula Washington, Cirque du Soleil and so many others (including the War Bird fly over at Crenshaw and MLK Blvd) went for nought when the shuttle ran so far behind schedule. The one thing they did not show was the 400+ trees they sacrificed and cut down to make the journey. It could have been helicoptered in, but that would not have been as dramatic. Or it could have been shot as dramatically and as well.

Awesome time lapse, though it was made to appear as if trees were spared along the route. Sadly, hundreds of mature trees were chopped down to enable the shuttle to pass by slowly. For a temporary spectacle, working class neighborhoods lost the beauty and value of their old shade trees. Few locals were consulted and environmental review was rubber-stamped. Does anyone think Beverly Hills or Pacific Palisades could've been forced to sacrifice their old trees? Many seniors and other residents will not live long enough to see replacement saplings grow to the majesty of the removed trees. The Endeavor should've been moved some other way OR, better yet, a CA Sci. Center Annex could've been located near LAX where visitors from around the world could visit the shuttle as they use our airport; school tours of the airport could compare the shuttle to planes; and L.A. residents could see it there anytime. Instead, egos prevailed to drag the shuttle to the CA Sci. Center in Exposition Park. Impressive, but don't forget the trees that were unnecessarily sacrificed along the way. I worked at JPL and Griffith Observatory for two decades. I support space exploration and sci. education. But, I did not support the way the shuttle took precedent over the trees.

Very cool – took a great deal of organization. Our firm helped develop components that go into the shuttle. Much of it is technology developed in the 70's. The travesty is that we put the latest technology into the missile guidance systems and robotic killing drones that murder civilians in Afganistan. We gotta stop killing. The US produces more weapons than every other country in the world – combined, while the schools and the infrastucture crumble. Your elected officials are OWNED by corporations – that's the root of the problem.

The space shuttle weighs in excess of 2,000 TONS. I do not know of a helicopter that could pick up that much weight. To put that in perspective, a CH-47 Chinook can only care about 28,000 lbs.

Amazing job! The angles chosen were perfect. I loved the view from inside the room looking out as Endeavor rode past. Also, whoever thought of blurring the street sign then focusing on United States, hat's off to you. Incredible idea. Thanks to all involved with this video project.
