Sue Swenson, deputy assistant secretary for special education and rehabilitative services, will give remarks at Assistive Technology Partners in Denver at 6:00 p.m. MT, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, as part of the U.S. Department of Education’s third annual back-to-school bus tour. Swenson will highlight the importance of parent engagement and discuss new technologies that help students and individuals with disabilities to transition successfully into college and careers. The audience will include individuals with disabilities and their families, teachers, assistive technology providers, and other stakeholders.

Swenson’s visit is part of a series of events in Colorado, one of the states that U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan and his senior leadership team are visiting on the back-to-school bus tour, “Education Drives America.” On Monday, Secretary Duncan visited Lowry Elementary School in Denver and Limon Public Schools. Other Department leaders visited Sheridan School District, Gateway High School in Aurora, and the University of Colorado Boulder. Topics have included school reform and student success; STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education; creating a positive school climate; and “Let’s Move!,” First Lady Michelle Obama’s initiative to end childhood obesity through good nutrition and a healthy lifestyle.
