2nd annual financial literacy summit
draws 200 participants to Lambeau

GREEN BAY – More than 200 people from across the state gathered at Lambeau Field on Oct. 12 for the second annual Wisconsin Summit on Financial Literacy. Among the speakers was Scott Niederjohn (pictured at right), an economics professor at Lakeland College and a member of the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy, one of the sponsors of the summit.

The conference was geared toward supporting community outreach educators and teachers in strengthening their existing programs on personal finance and offering recommendations for implementing new programs to diverse communities. Topics included a community financial literacy roundtable, creating a community financial literacy program, important resources on financial literacy, identifying community partners, financial coaching, best practices and strategies for successful community initiatives, and financial coaching.

In addition to Governor Walker’s Council on Financial Literacy, other sponsors were the Department of Financial Institutions and its Office of Financial Literacy, EconomicsWisconsin, the Lakeland College Center for Economic Education, Ariens, the Council for Economic Education, Fox Communities Credit Union, the Green Bay Packers, IBM, the Kohler Foundation, Northwestern Mutual, State Farm Insurance, the Vollrath Company and the Windway Foundation.


DFI moving to new location
as of Monday, Nov. 19

MADISON – The Department of Financial Institutions will have a new physical address in downtown Madison as of Monday, Nov. 19. The new offices will be located in the Tommy G. Thompson Commerce Building at 201 W. Washington Ave., about one block from DFI’s current location.

Normal office hours of 7:45 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. will be in effect on Friday, Nov. 16 – DFI’s last day at its current location of 345 W. Washington Ave. DFI will open for business at its new location at 7:45 a.m. the following Monday. DFI will occupy the entire fifth floor and part of the third floor at the new building.

New business formation in Wisconsin
tracking 7.7% over prior year

MADISON – The number of new business entities formed in Wisconsin through September stood at 27,086, an increase of 7.7% compared to the same period in 2011, according to data released today by the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI).

The business formation data is compiled by DFI, which is the filing office for the creation of business entities in the state. DFI tracks new business entity creation on a monthly basis and posts the data on its website.

Municipalities receive grants to improve neighborhoods

MADISON – Seven Wisconsin municipalities will receive $218,145 in grants to demolish blighted houses as part of a statewide program designed to improve residential neighborhoods. Municipalities receiving funding under the Strategic Blight Elimination Program are:

  • Eau Claire, $18,950 to remove one house.
  • Mauston, $39,000 to remove six houses.
  • Merrill, $20,000 to remove one house.
  • Oconomowoc, $24,000 to remove three houses.
  • Oconto County, $46,195 to remove four houses.
  • Portage, $25,000 to remove one house.
  • Wausau, $45,000 to remove three houses.

New Executive Assistant named at DFI

MADISON – Lucas Vebber, policy adviser and district director for former State Sen. Rich Zipperer, will join the Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions (DFI) as Executive Assistant effective Oct. 29, DFI Secretary Peter Bildsten announced today.

“We are pleased to have Lucas joining the DFI team,” Bildsten said. “His legislative experience and legal background will be great assets for the Department as it strives to fulfill its mission of keeping Wisconsin’s financial institutions safe and sound.”
