Merger

As directed by the Department of Justice in June 2012, the Office of the Federal Detention Trustee will merge with the United States Marshals Service (USMS) on October 1, 2012.  The merger of these Department of Justice entities will better align detention resources with existing operations, streamline financial processes and reduce administrative costs.  USMS Director Stacia Hylton will also assume the duties as the Federal Detention Trustee.  Her vision is a premier, world-class prisoner operations capability supporting the Judicial process by ensuring the effective, safe, secure, and humane detention and transportation of Federal detainees at the best value.

The size and scope of Federal detention demands a central organization that can direct resources and implement programmatic changes. A central structure is key to realizing cost savings and gaining efficiency. The Federal Detention Trustee reports directly to the Deputy Attorney General.
