Cohen: Medicare Open Enrollment Season Has Begun

Oct 16, 2012 Issues: 9th District, Memphis, Shelby County, Tennessee

MEMPHIS, TN – Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) today informed 9th District constituents that Medicare open enrollment season has begun and will continue until December 7.  This is the only time during the year that changes in drug plans and Advantage plans are allowed.

“Medicare open enrollment season is officially underway,” said Congressman Cohen.  “Now is the time to make changes to your Medicare plan if necessary.  There are representatives available via phone for those who need assistance.  I encourage 9th District residents to take advantage of Medicare open enrollment before it ends on December 7.”

The Aging Commission of the Mid-South’s SHIP (State Health Insurance Program) kicked off a Medicare Drug Plan Open Enrollment yesterday at Middle Baptist Church on Whitehaven Lane that Congressman Cohen attended.

Anyone with a Medicare drug plan needs to have their drug plan evaluated annually during open enrollment, which is October 15 through December 7.  People with Medicare can call 800.MEDICARE or visit www.medicare.gov for plan information. If a person is satisfied that their current plan will meet their needs for next year, they don’t need to do anything.

SHIP is an unbiased, objective counseling service that provides beneficiaries with information so that they can make educated decisions concerning their plans.  The SHIP program does not sell insurance.  If you have questions regarding Medicare or would like to know about counseling locations, please call SHIP at 901.222.4111. Services are provided by Aging Commission of the Mid-South, Tennessee Commission on Aging and Disability, Centers for Medicare Services, and Senior Medicare Patrol.
