WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congressman Donald M. Payne released the following statement commending the Obama Administration for committing additional aid to the Horn of Africa.
“The United Nations declared a famine in two areas of southern Somalia, the Bakool and Lower Shabelle regions. The current famine is claimed to be the worst in over 50 years. The UN’s official recognition, efforts by Members of Congress and the international community have helped shed light on this devastating famine, one that has plagued over 10 million people and continues to claim the lives of thousands of children each day.
“On July 20, 2011, I introduced a House Resolution calling on the United States to continue its food and humanitarian support for the people of the Horn of Africa. The resolution also called on the United States to participate in education and training for local governments and organizations in agricultural practices to promote food security and water conservation.
“Today, the Obama Administration has begun what I hope will be a heightened effort to commit additional humanitarian assistance to the millions affected by this ongoing famine. This is truly a regional crisis as countries of the Horn are mutually connected by the causes of the disaster including drought, crop failure and livestock mortality. While the United States has answered the immediate calls for aid, we must ensure that we continue to provide humanitarian assistance to those in need and sustainable agricultural assistance that will prevent this type of tragedy in the future.”
