Rep. Turner And Assemblyman Miller Submit Formal Application For Glendale Zipcode

New York – Congressman Bob Turner (NY-09) and Assemblyman Michael Miller (D-38) submitted a formal application to the United States Postal Service for a unique zipcode for Glendale, Queens.

“Glendale is a unique community and should have its own zipcode,” Turner said. “Sharing a zipcode has created numerous, and sometimes dangerous, problems for Glendale residents such as delays in medication delivery and first responder services. Assemblyman Miller and I are asking the USPS to help remedy these issues by taking our application into consideration as soon as possible.”

Turner and Miller have been working on the issue for months, and Miller agrees that it is time for Glendale residents to get a unique zipcode.
“Glendale has its own identity, but it’s more than that.” Assemblyman Miller said. “I recently purchased a piece of equipment.  I went online to register it. I typed in my address several times and it just would not work. I called up customer service and explained the problem. They told me they did not have a Glendale in the 11385 ZIP code, but they could register me in Ridgewood. My story is just one of many stories; stories of seniors not getting their medications delivered properly or an Access-A-Ride bus that cannot find a house and never shows up. This is a serious issue that needs to be addressed. Real people are affected.”
Turner personally handed the application to Frank Calabrese, District Manager of the USPS Triboro District, at a meeting on Tuesday May 22nd at his Queens district office. Turner and an aide to Miller also presented Calabrese with a letter outlining the concerns expressed by local residents and businesses over the shared zipcode, numerous letters in support of an individual zipcode for Glendale from various community and civic organizations, and a petition with 1,000 signatures from Glendale residents asking for the change.

Turner and Miller have also noted to the USPS that despite the 11385 zip code shared by Glendale and Ridgewood having double the population of other zip codes in Queens, the adjoining 11384 zip remains vacant and could easily be used to remedy the situation.

“This is a situation that can be easily fixed,” Turner said. “The USPS would only have to change one digit to make life easier for numerous Queens residents. It would also simplify operations for local USPS employees by reducing the amount of misaddressed mail being caused by redundant street names in Ridgewood and Glendale. This is a win-win situation. Assemblyman Miller and I are asking the USPS to help remedy these issues as soon as possible”

Congressman Turner’s office has followed up with the USPS who informed him that they will be doing a study on the application and an answer should be forthcoming by the end of the summer.
