Physical Scientist 2 - Trace

RECRUITMENT ONLY

PURPOSE: To perform under immediate supervision, specific, well-defined activities requiring professional or scientific training that are designed to prepare incumbent for examination duties. These activities include processing items of evidence for the presence of hairs, fibers, and conducting examinations regarding cordage and fabric.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Receives evidence and inventories it. Prepares related note.

• Performs routine analyses and tests related to evidence.

• Makes minor modifications to standard protocols.

• Photographs evidence.

• Assists in directing work of Physical Scientists 1.

REQUIREMENTS:

Bachelor's degree in Natural Science (biology, chemistry, physical anthropology, textile science, forensic science or related discipline) and two to four years job related experience. One to two years of concentrated trace evidence experience in a forensic laboratory accredited by the American Society of Certified Lab Directors (ASCLD) will be considered in lieu of two to four years of more general trace evidence experience. For three of the five (5) years immediately prior to applying for the specific contract position, the individual must have 1) resided in the United States; 2) worked for the United States overseas in a Federal or military capability; or 3) be a dependent of a Federal or military employee serving overseas. These individuals must, however, be United States citizens or Permanent Resident Aliens. Must have advanced knowledge of the principles, theories, concepts and practices of biological sciences, chemistry, physical anthropology, textile science or forensic science. Must have knowledge of and experience in using laboratory equipment, the techniques, and procedures related to the collecting trace evidence. Must have demonstrated proficiency of microscopy and skill in applying established methods and procedures to provide technical information about submitted items of evidence and to suggest minor modifications of methods and procedures to solve problems encountered or to improve the quality of results. Experience in written and oral administrative skills required. Must have a thorough knowledge of examinations performed and the policies, procedures and organizational structure of the laboratory in order to coordinate the delivery and receipt of evidence. Sound knowledge of laboratory safety practices in order to carry out duties in a safe manner required. Must have basic knowledge of general procedures used in other forensic disciplines. Specialized Requirements: (1) Must successfully complete and pass the FBI Laboratory/TEDAC training requirements. (2) Must successfully complete an FBI competency test within the time period as set forth by the FBI Laboratory/TEDAC program. At a minimum, the competency test will include: Examination of sufficient unknown samples to cover the anticipated spectrum of job duties and evaluation of his/her ability to perform suitable testing methods; and a written or oral examination to assess his/her knowledge of the discipline, category of testing, or task being performed. Must be able to pass a government security background investigation and to obtain and maintain a Top Secret (TS) security clearance.
