TORII STATION, OKINAWA , JAPAN — June 12, 2008 — National History Day (NHD) is a highly regarded academic event that students in grades six through 12 participate in nationwide and in DoDDS schools in Europe and the Pacific. Each year, more than half a million students, encouraged by thousands of teachers nationwide participate in the NHD program.

Students choose historical topics related to the yearly theme, which is Conflict and Compromise for 2008, and conduct extensive primary and secondary research through libraries, archives, museums, oral history interviews and historic sites. After analyzing and interpreting their sources and drawing conclusions about their topics’ significance in history, students presented their research projects in one of five categories of entries, including papers, exhibits, performances, documentaries and original web sites.

Ten schools competed against projects submitted from Guam, Korea, and Okinawa. Students showcased their projects by submitting them on disc to the Pacific Area Office.  The projects were judged by our curriculum specialists and administrators. First and second place winners received Far East medals.

“I wish to acknowledge the encouragement and support from the administrators, teachers, and parents whose commitment serves as the key ingredient for the success of our students,” explained Dr. Nancy Bresell, Director, DoDDS-Pacific/DDESS-Guam.
