Physical Sciences Directorate

Technology Transfer/Partnerships

A key strength of the research performed in the Physical Sciences Directorate is the close coupling between the fundamental and applied research areas. An indication of this strength is that over half of the intellectual property developed at ORNL resides in this directorate.

Some of the technologies developed by researchers in our Directorate have provided a competitive edge for U.S. industries in many areas, such as high-temperature superconductors, advanced materials processing, chemical separations by design, and mass spectrometry, to name a few.

The Excellence in Technology Transfer Awards from the Federal Laboratory Consortium for Technology Transfer and the R&D 100 Awards that have been received by staff in the Physical Sciences Directorate are indicative of the quality of new technologies that our staff regularly delivers.
