PEACHTREE CITY, GA — May 24, 2010 — Dr. Linda Curtis, Area Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment for the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mr. Emilio Garza has been named principal of Butner Elementary School, at Fort Bragg, N.C., in the North Carolina District.

Garza is currently acting assistant principal at Lejeune High School, aboard Camp Lejeune, N.C. Prior to this temporary assignment, he was assistant principal at Gordon Elementary School at Fort Bragg. Upon retiring from the U.S. Army in 1997, Garza served as the Lead Senior Army Instructor with the Logan County Schools and then as an assistant principal and principal of Calhoun Middle/High School, both in West Virginia. He was principal of Memorial Middle School, in Rockdale County, GA, for four years.

“Mr. Garza is well prepared for the challenges of leadership, having served as a principal in West Virginia and Georgia before joining DoDEA last year as an assistant principal at Gordon ES,” said Dr. Emily Marsh, North Carolina District Superintendent. “Mr. Garza’s active duty experiences give him a unique insight into the challenges our children and their parents face each day. I am delighted he now joins our leadership team as a building principal.”

Garza earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Resource Management from Troy State University; his Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership, a second Master’s Degree in Industrial and Employee Relations, and his Education Specialist Degree all from Marshall University. He and his wife, Linda, have one son, Emilio III, who is serving in the U.S. Air Force.
