PEACHTREE CITY, GA — September 10, 2007 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mr. Michael A. Gould has been named the new District Superintendent for the New York/Virginia/Puerto Rico District. He will replace Dr. Bruce Jeter who was recently named DDESS Deputy Director.

“The interview panel was very impressed with the professionalism and integrity that Mike Gould brings to the table. He is prepared, organized and committed to the education of the children that we serve in the NY/VA/PR District,” Beraza said. “He sets others up for success and remembers to recognize their contributions at every opportunity. He sets the mood, the tone and climate where the entire school and community work together to achieve excellence in what is best for all students.”

Currently the DDESS New York/Virginia District assistant superintendent, Gould will assume his new responsibilities Sept. 30. Gould joined the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) in 1982, as an elementary classroom teacher at Russell Elementary School aboard Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and has taught for 11 years. He helped research and implement the middle school concept at Quantico. His administrative experience includes serving as an Instructional Systems Specialist, Quantico Middle School principal and interim principal at West Point Elementary School. He has served in his current position since 1999.

Gould earned his bachelor’s of art degree in elementary education from Wilkes College (now Wilkes University) in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. He earned his master’s of education degree from The University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA. Gould and his wife, Lori, have two daughters.
