PEACHTREE CITY, GA — May 22, 2006 — Dr. Elaine Beraza, Director, Department of Defense (DoD) Domestic Dependent Elementary and Secondary Schools (DDESS) and Department of Defense Dependents Schools, Cuba, (DoDDS-Cuba) announced today that Mrs. Phyllis Parker, Wilson Elementary School principal, at Fort Benning, Georgia, and Mrs. Linda Haberman, Assistant Principal of Marshall Elementary School, at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, have been nominated to represent DDESS in two upcoming competitions.

Phyllis Parker, who this summer will take the reins at McBride Elementary School, was selected to compete with the Europe and Pacific nominees for the 2006 National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP) National Distinguished Principals of the Year Award Program. She has been the principal of Wilson ES since 1990. Prior to that, she was a classroom teacher and served as an assistant principal at Faith Middle School for two years.

Under the Parker's leadership, Wilson ES earned the distinction of being named a Model School in the integration of Technology by the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory. Wilson School's Partnership with Basic Combat Training Brigade, which began in 2000, has received numerous awards under Parker's leadership. She was instrumental in bringing the Keep Columbus Beautiful program to Wilson ES. The program granted their highest award to the school in 2005 and 2006 when it named Wilson the Gateway School of the Year.

Linda Haberman was selected as the DDESS area's nominee to compete with the DoDDS-Europe and DoDDS-Pacific nominees for DoDEA's 2006 Recognition Program for Elementary-Middle Level Assistant Principal of the Year.

Haberman taught for 18 years, 10 of those with DDESS at Fort Campbell and Fort Bragg, NC, in all grade levels, before she entered administration. For the past five years, she served as an assistant principal at Lincoln Elementary and most currently at Marshall Elementary schools on Fort Campbell. She is a published author and accomplished presenter.

She and her husband, Gregory, have two children, Nicholas and Savannah. She is an adult leader with the Boy Scouts and is active in the booster club at her children's school.
