Those installations are the Air Force Academy, Fort Carson, and Peterson A.F.B., home to the Air Force's Headquarters Space Command.

Colorado Springs Facts

Located at the base of Pike's Peak, Colorado Springs offers various attractions in or near the city. A favorite stop is the Garden of the Gods, a 1,364-acre national landmark visible from many locations within the city. Its rock formations are popular with the area's rock climbers. The Garden of the Gods is maintained by Colorado Springs and has walking paths and picnic areas in and around the formations for visitors.

Your tour of duty or visit to the Colorado Springs area would not be complete without a trip to the summit of Pikes Peak. Though considered unclimbable in 1806, visitors now have their choice of paths to the top of the 14,110 foot mountain. You can hike up the mountain or simply sit back, relax, and let the Manitou and Pikes Peak Railway take you to the summit, or you can drive to the top on the Pikes Peak Highway, a 19 mile toll road. The Crystal Creek Reservoir Visitors Center, has lots of information about the area's history, its geology, weather patterns and wildlife.

About one mile northeast of downtown Colorado Springs is the U.S. Olympic Training Center. It is the headquarters for the U.S. Olympic Committee and used to be an old Air Force base. Some of the older buildings served as military housing facilities. Visitors are welcome to tour the Training Center complex, and may catch a glimpse of one of America's athletes training for future competition.
