What is social bookmarking?

You can use social bookmarking to store, organize, search, and share links to your favorite Web pages.

Most social bookmark services will encourage you to organize your bookmarks with informal tags instead of traditional folders. They also let you view similar bookmarks you might like by selecting an associated tag. Some services can automatically guess at relationships between the users, the tags, and the bookmarked Web sites, and create new groups of bookmark.

What is a "tag"?

A tag is a word or phrase you assign to a piece of information (in this case, the information is the address of the page you were just looking at on this Web site). The tag becomes metadata: new information that helps create relationships with the original information. Using tags, you can search for information more quickly and get results that are closer to what you really want.
