Dr. Philip Gordon was nominated as Assistant Secretary on March 6th, 2009 and took the oath of office on May 15th 2009. As Assistant Secretary he is responsible for 50 countries in Europe and Eurasia as well as NATO, the EU and the OSCE.
Dr. Gordon has previously served as a Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution in Washington, DC; Director for European Affairs at the National Security Council under President Bill Clinton; and Senior Fellow, International Institute for Strategic Studies, London.
He has a Ph.D. and M.A. from Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) and a B.A. from Ohio University. His working languages include French, German, Italian and some Spanish. Dr. Gordon is the author of numerous books and articles on international relations and foreign policy and has been a frequent contributor to major publications such as the New York Times, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, and Financial Times.
