FDA approves crystal-dissolving eye drops
Read the heroic story about how an experimental eye-drop solution containing a drug called cysteamine eliminates the the painful and destructive crystalline shards in the eyes of patients suffering from a rare, inherited condition called nephropathic cystinosis. NIH researchers study microbial shift between healthy children and adults
Julie Segre, Ph.D., NHGRI Genetics and Molecular Biology Branch senior investigator, and colleagues at the National Cancer Institute report in the Oct. 10, 2012 advance online issue of
Genome Medicine that bacterial communities in chidren's nasal passages differ strikingly from those of adults. The authors suggest that these shifts in the skin microbiome may be relevant to prevention, diagnosis and treatment strategies of disorders like atopic dermatitis.
