Background Information |
Sample Map
The Current Population Survey (CPS) is a monthly survey of about 50,000 households conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau for the Bureau of
Labor Statistics. The survey has been conducted for more than 50 years. The CPS is the primary source
of information on the labor force characteristics of the U.S. population. It is also used to identify and
survey a sampling of those who voted in national elections. The sample is scientifically selected to represent
the civilian noninstitutional population.
Voting and registration rates are historically higher in years with presidential elections.
However, in the 2008 presidential election, 64 percent of voting-age citizens voted, an estimate not statistically
different from the percent that turned out in 2004, but higher than the 2000 presidential election. Of the
voters registered in 2008, nearly 90% reported that they had voted in the national election.
