JOB POSTING:  Assistant Professor of Religious Studies (Indigenous Studies), Hamilton College

 

The Religious Studies Department at Hamilton College seeks applicants for a tenure-track position in indigenous studies at assistant professor rank to start July 1, 2013.  The Department seeks applicants with a specialization in an indigenous tradition in the Americas with a capacity to teach others in a comparative perspective.  Additional interests include indigeneity theory, gender construction, and the global indigenous rights movements. Discipline open but candidates should display a capacity to engage perspectives on religion (traditions, lifeways) in an interdisciplinary undergraduate program.  PhD preferred but strong ABD candidates will be considered.  Hamilton is nationally recognized for the quality of its undergraduate education and provides strong support for scholarly activity.

Founded in 1902 to promote the discipline of Anthropology, the American Anthropological Association (AAA) has long been the world’s largest professional organization in the field.  AAA stimulates and coordinates the efforts of anthropologists, fosters local and other societies devoted to anthropology, serves as a bond among anthropologists and anthropological organizations, and both publishes and encourages the publication of matters pertaining to anthropology. AAA’s 11,000 members work in all sub-sections of anthropology: Archeology and social, cultural, biological, linguistic and practicing anthropology in the academy, NGOs, government and private industry throughout the world. The Association conducts the world’s largest annual meeting of anthropologists and publishes over 20 peer-reviewed scholarly journals. The Position

The Executive Director is responsible for the successful leadership and management of the organization whose strategic direction is set by the Executive Board. The Executive Director serves as an ex-officio, non-voting member on all association boards and committees. The position is available due to the pending retirement of the incumbent. In his 16-year tenure, the AAA has grown substantially, reflecting his strengths in staff management and development, board governance, and a sound understanding of how such organizations succeed.

Primary Responsibilities

Governance/Leadership

  • Provide leadership in collaboration with the Executive Board in developing organizational, financial and program plans to achieve the mission of the association.
  • Support the Executive Board in its policy making and priority setting responsibilities as well as support the Officers in the execution of their duties.
  • Support development of, and then execute, AAA’s strategic plan.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of significant matters in the field.


Outreach

  • Identify, assess and inform the Executive Board of internal and external conditions and issues that may affect AAA, proposing strategic responses and initiatives as appropriate.
  • Represent AAA to similar organizations, national and international, government and regulatory bodies, the media, and potential funding sources, ensuring such activities are consistent with the advancement of the Association’s interests.

Membership

  • Monitor and evaluate the Association’s internal membership, financial and program conditions and trends.
  • Assess member needs and goals, developing programs and services of value and interest to members, present and prospective.
  • Promote active, broad and diverse membership participation throughout the organization.


Administration (Management)

  • Oversee successful implementation of the organization’s programs including publications, annual meeting, public policy and membership.
  • Determine staffing requirements for organizational management and program delivery, overseeing the hiring, firing, promotion, compensation, evaluation, management and motivation of staff in accordance with relevant statutes and AAA policies. 
  • Establish management policies, procedures and guidelines as are necessary to implement the strategic direction and policy decisions of the Executive Board. 
  • Develop and execute appropriate fund raising strategies. 
  • Oversee AAA’s budget and finances in accord with Board policies and guidelines,   proposing initiatives to increase the organization’s financial resources as appropriate.
  • Execute written contracts and/or agreements as are necessary to assure the implementation of the purposes, goals and objectives of the Association.
  • Maintain official records, and documents, and ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations.

  Requirements
An advanced degree is required. Familiarity with anthropology or related field is highly desirable. Certification in association management is a plus. Demonstrated commitment to diversity and social justice essential. Must have a successful record of leadership with 10+ years of progressive experience in senior management at an association, institution, a corporate environment or in higher education. Effectiveness in forging strong working relationships with and providing support to the Executive Board and Officers. Knowledge of not-for-profit management. Proven success in staff and financial management. Ability to analyze national and international trends impacting the discipline and AAA. Ability to develop appropriate organizational responses to meet the challenges and needs of the organization. Success in representing and promoting an association or similar organization to external audiences. Demonstrated skills in fund raising. Also needed: imagination, initiative, willingness to take risks, and to act with diplomacy and discretion.
