On May 1, 2009, Brian V. Kennedy was appointed as the Assistant Secretary for Congressional and Intergovernmental Affairs. Prior to his return to the Department of Labor, Mr. Kennedy served as General Counsel to Rep. George Miller (D-Calif.), chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor.
Brian spent 5 years at the Department of Labor as the Assistant Director of Job Corps. Under the Clinton administration, Mr. Kennedy was appointed as a Special Assistant to the President for Economic Policy, at the National Economic Council, where he focused on job training, higher education and labor policy.
Prior to working at the White House, Mr. Kennedy worked for more than ten years on job training, labor and education policy in the United States Senate and the U.S. House of Representatives.
Mr. Kennedy's work in the Senate included serving as Staff Director for Senator Paul Simon, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Employment and Productivity, which had jurisdiction over Federal job training programs and employment discrimination. While he served as Staff Director, Mr. Kennedy led Senate efforts to pass the Job Training Partnership Act Amendments, and the School-to-Work Opportunities Act. Prior to moving to the Subcommittee, Mr. Kennedy served as General Counsel to Senator Harry Reid.
In 1995, Mr. Kennedy moved to the House of Representatives' Committee on Education and the Workforce, where he served as Labor Coordinator and Counsel for Ranking Democrat Bill Clay. During his tenure in the House of Representatives, Mr. Kennedy was instrumental in the passage of the Workforce Investment Act.
Mr. Kennedy received his Bachelor of Science degree from James Madison University in 1982, where he graduated with honors. He received his law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law in 1985.
