Description:
Using Recovery Act funding, contractors are cleaning up dozens of waste sites. In this photo from October 2009, workers continue to excavate soil from the 100-UPR-K-1 waste site, beneath the former K East Basin, a concrete structure that once stored spent nuclear fuel. The soil was contaminated when water leaked from the basin in the 1970s and 1990s. The soil is being transported to Hanford's disposal facility for low-level waste.
