Tomorrow, April 15, ED will hold its fourth and final Community College Regional Summit at San Diego City College in San Diego, Calif. The focus of this one-day event is on Exemplary Programs for Veterans, Military Members, and Families, and will bring together federal, labor, industry and philanthropic partners to discuss how each entity can support local community college efforts to meet the President’s goal of having the best-educated workforce and the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020.
Other topics to be discussed at the summit include solutions and promising practices in college completion, developmental education, industry-education partnerships, services to military service-members and veterans, transitioning adults to community colleges, and successful transfer programs to four year colleges and universities. The Summit will also provide a forum to identify local, state and national recommendations for increasing community college completion in order to meet the President’s 2020 goal.

I am a single mom in Munford, TN. I am 37 years old and decided that my children deserve a better life and deserve a much better role model so I took the GED test and passed in the 90th percentile. I then registered at our local community college and will be finishing my first year in three weeks. To finish faster and get to working on a job that can benefit us all, I enrolled in summer classes. To my surprise I find that there may be no financial aid this summer. How can we finish faster if we can’t go? Education is so very important! This should be the one place where cuts are NEVER made. Why do they want to compromise everyone’s future. Without education, everyone will be depending on the government for food stamps, medicaid, and TANF. How is that going to help the budget? Just giving my silly opinion. I am enjoying college very much and want to thank Mr. Obama for fighting to leave our fall aid in place. I am behind our President 100% because for once in a very long time, I feel that the “real” people of this country finally have someone to stand up and give them a voice too.
