Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality director John M. Eisenberg, M-D, testified yesterday [February 9, 2000] before the House Subcommittee on Labor, H-H-S and Education appropriations about the agency's budget for fiscal year two thousand one. Dr. Eisenberg discussed the agency's new priorities of patient safety and medical errors, worker health, and information technology. He emphasized the agency's plan to reduce medical errors.

(EISENBERG):
"WE'RE GOING TO TREAT THIS LIKE WE WOULD TREAT AN EPIDEMIC. WE ARE GOING TO SPEND 20 MILLION ON UNDERSTANDING THE CAUSES OF ERRORS IN AMERICAN HOSPITALS AND OUTPATIENT CARE, TO USE THAT INFORMATION AND TO USE THOSE TOOLS SO THAT PATIENT SAFETY IN THE UNITED STATES CAN BE ASSURED AND IMPROVED."

(CLOSE):
Dr. Eisenberg's testimony also discussed A-H-R-Q's ongoing research in quality improvement, clinical preventive services, health care costs, and building the Nation's capacity for research to improve health care. The agency's budget request for F-Y two thousand one is $250 million. This is Mike Weiner reporting.
