Washington, DC, Oct 2 - Today, Congresswoman Maxine Waters (D-Calif.) released the following statement in response to the passing of Len Canty, Chairman of the Black Economic Council (BEC):

I was deeply saddened to learn of the death of Len Canty, a steadfast advocate for the African-American community.  As chairman of the Black Economic Council (BEC), Len did not rely on a bevy of lobbyists and lawyers.  Regardless of the issue, Len would personally make frequent trips to Washington, armed with his knowledge, experience and an unwavering commitment to diversity, and the economic prosperity of his community.  From the financial services industry, to Silicon Valley, to holding federal agencies accountable for their regulatory responsibilities, Len fought for access and opportunity on behalf of minority and women owned enterprises in California and across the country.

“Len and his coalition worked closely with my office over the years, and I can say that during these challenging economic times, he was one of our community’s consistent and stalwart champions.  I will cherish the opportunity I had to know and work with him, and I am confident that the Black Economic Council will continue his legacy of service and personal sacrifice.
