Investigative Update: CSX Derailment, Ellicott City, Md
August 24, 2012
The National Transportation Safety Board today released additional information regarding the derailment of 21 coal cars of a CSX train in Ellicott City, Md. According to the NTSB:
- The time of the derailment is now estimated to have occurred slightly earlier, at 11:56 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 20, 2012
- Initial damage estimate provided by CSX is $2.2 million, which includes environmental remediation costs
- Investigation of the signal systems has been completed
- All rail equipment involved in the accident has been recovered and inspected
- Interviews with the train crew, maintenance workers and track inspection personnel will be completed by Friday afternoon
- Jim Southworth, the NTSB's Investigator-in-Charge of the accident, expects the Board's on-scene phase of the investigation to be completed by Saturday afternoon, Aug. 25.
