Welcome to Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, a U.S. Department of Energy national laboratory proudly operated by Battelle, where our mission is to transform the world through courageous discovery and innovation. We deliver S&T leadership to the nation
At PNNL, we are making important scientific discoveries and delivering unique solutions in energy, the environment, fundamental science and national security. Among many other initiatives, our scientists and engineers are making advancements for the benefit of the nation in the areas of:
- Design and scalable synthesis of materials and chemicals;
- Coupling earth and energy systems for sustainability;
- Efficient and secure electricity management from generation to end use; and
- Signature discovery and exploitation for threat detection and reduction.

Our approach to managing and operating PNNL is to simultaneously deliver excellence in science and technology, management and operations, and community service. Achieving simultaneous excellence means we enable the conduct of research to maximize national impact in a way that is safe, secure and sustainable.
We are building community vitality
While the activities at PNNL strengthen our regional economy, we also are focused on strengthening the fabric of our community. That's why we are investing in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) education; leading statewide education initiatives; and providing leadership to Washington state’s first STEM-based high school. Our philanthropic culture is part of who we are; in FY2011 alone, staff volunteered more than 25,200 hours at a wide variety of community organizations.
