Getting Moving to Cleanup a Watershed

Two Saturdays ago, I had the privilege of joining the Connecticut River Watershed Council in Hartford for their annual Source to Sea Cleanup event. This year’s cleanup was one of over 2,100 similar events taking place across the country in honor of National Public Lands Day, a day devoted to restoring and conserving our treasured public lands.

See the Fall Colors at a National Forest Near You

The U.S. Forest Service has put together an online resource to help you find when the fall colors will be best at a forest near you!

Visit the 2012 Fall Colors website or call the toll-free Fall Colors Hotline at 1-800-354-4595 to help you plan your next trip to America’s great outdoors.

Celebrate the Wonders of Nature!

Editor's note: National wildlife refuges provide habitat for more than 700 species of birds, 220 species of mammals, 250 reptile and amphibian species and more than 1,000 species of fish. More than 280 threatened or endangered plants or animals are protected on wildlife refuges. Each year, millions of migrating birds use refuges as stepping stones while they fly thousands of miles between their summer and winter homes.

Doctor's Orders: Go Out and Play!

In late September, the National Park Service and several partner organizations launched Healthy Parks Healthy People Greater Washington Area, a new initiative to promote the many health benefits of time in nature, and to connect DC area kids and families to the parks and green spaces in their communities.

What Are You Doing This Weekend?

Tomorrow, more than 170,000 people across the country are expected to celebrate National Public Lands Day – America’s largest, single-day, outdoor volunteer effort. More than 2,000 public land and water sites across the country will offer FREE admission to volunteers who give a few hours of their time to help improve and restore outdoor spaces.

An Olympic Mom at Let’s Move! London

Ed note: This guest post was provided by Dara Torres, who competed in five Olympic games and won 12 medals for Team USA.

My daughter Tessa and I really had such an amazing experience traveling to London together for the first week of the Olympics. Although I was hoping to be there as an athlete (having just missed making the team by nine one hundredths of a second), it was still fun to be there as a spectator.

When we talk about all the wonderful things we did over there, the one thing that stands out in both our minds was the Let's Move event put on by the First Lady and Nickelodeon.

Go for the Gold this Summer with MyPlate and Let's Move!

As we watch and are inspired by Team USA's 2012 Olympic results in London, we can all take a cue from our team and strive to live a little more like athletes ourselves. A nutritious diet and regular physical activity are the building blocks to peak performance. This summer, MyPlate and Let’s Move! are encouraging Americans to make healthier eating choices and include physical activity into their daily routine to support Team USA and celebrate the Olympic Games.

ChooseMyPlate.gov can help answer your questions about nutrition, weight management, physical activity, food safety, and building healthier meals. The website can help you make daily food decisions by providing information about food groups and portions sizes, and offering simple recipes that reflect the Dietary Guidelines for Americans 2010 recommendations. We encourage you to check out the 10 Tips Nutrition Education Series. Topics include “Eating Better on a Budget,” “Healthy Eating for Vegetarians,” and many more.
