Growing pains now a memory, Marriott breaks ground today

Austin

City officials and hotel executives will participate in the official groundbreaking for the J W Marriott hotel Tuesday, located on Congress Avenue. Upon its completion, the 27-story, $185-million building will be downtown’s biggest hotel. Council voted last year to give $4 million in tax breaks to build the Marriott, with hopes the franchise would bring hundreds of jobs to the local economy. However, the new hotel came at a price, resulting in the controversial closure of the popular Mexican eatery, Las Manitas. While city leaders made strides years ago to save the local staple, it permanently shut its doors in 2008.

New development will soon surround the Broken Spoke, the classic dance hall, but other bars with established identities have proven it's possible to thrive, regardless of what's being built just next door.
