MOH recipient shares a cold brew with Obama

WASHINGTON — Receiving a Medal of Honor comes with many additional benefits – a higher pension, lifetime access to military facilities, invites to White House events – but one that most of the heroes don’t take advantage of is the unofficial “drink beer with the president” perk.

Dakota Meyer didn’t let that opportunity pass by.

On Wednesday, administration officials released a photo of the 23-year-old, who is set to receive the medal later today, and President Barack Obama enjoying a beer on the back lawn of the White House.

According to a tweet from White House spokesman Jay Carney, Meyer mentioned that he’d love to share a cold one with the president while talking to staffers during a pre-event phone call this weekend. When Obama learned of the request, he opened his house and beer fridge to Meyer.

And it’s probably not the last free beer for Meyer, who today will become the first living Marine to receive the nation’s highest award for battlefield heroism since the end of the Vietnam War. But it has to be pretty satisfying to see the commander-in-chief pick up the first round.
