NOAA Fisheries Education Program

NOAA worked with the Anacostia Watershed Society to teach Washington, DC-area students about the importance of the Anacostia River. The students learned how to conduct hands-on restoration, including trash removal and wetlands-planting.

NOAA's Education Mission
"To advance environmental literacy and promote a diverse workforce in ocean, coastal, Great Lakes, weather, and climate sciences, encouraging stewardship and increasing informed decision making for the nation." This strategic direction is leveraged by the many cross-cutting education programs and initiatives across NOAA.

About NOAA's Education Mission
The America COMPETES Act (P.L. 110-69) gives the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, also called NOAA, broad authority for educational activities. Stemming from this statute and other program-specific education mandates, the NOAA education community works collaboratively to advance the priorities outlined in NOAA's Education Strategic Plan and meet NOAA's Education Mission.

About NOAA Fisheries’ Education Program

NOAA Fisheries’ Education Program develops and distributes high quality, science-based materials and activities that explore the science behind marine resource management and conservation for students and teachers.  Our materials also help the public understand the agency’s diverse mission which includes the stewardship of the nation's living marine resources and their habitats and the recovery of protected marine species (i.e. whales, turtles).

Materials & Activities

The Fish Watch Lessons and Activities - Debuted by NOAA Fisheries at the 2012 North American Association for Environmental Education, this collection of lesson plans and activities challenge high school students and their teachers to use the NOAA Fisheries’ FishWatch website to locate, manipulate, and analyze data to make informed decisions about sustainable seafood consumption. Students examine catch data and correlate trends with fisheries management measures to understand overfished, overfishing, and the stock rebuilding process for various species.  Habitat uses and impacts found on the FishWatch website are compared with fishing gear use and improvements to add to the understanding of ecosystem-based management.  Students also participate in simulated fishing seasons and modify their gear to reduce bycatch.  By the end of the activities, students are informed seafood consumers and can share their knowledge with their families and friends. View or download the collection.

Where We’re Making a Difference

  • Seattle, Washington - Check out this story on how NOAA Fisheries is partnering with Seattle’s environmental science-based elementary and middle school, Jane Addams K-8, to bring real-world science into classrooms. (Oct 2012)

Education Resources

NOAA Teacher At Sea Program - The mission of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s (NOAA) Teacher At Sea program is to give teachers a clearer insight into our ocean planet, a greater understanding of maritime work and studies, and to increase their level of environmental literacy by fostering an interdisciplinary research experience. The program provides a unique environment for learning and teaching by sending kindergarten through college-level teachers to sea aboard NOAA research and survey ships to work under the tutelage of scientists and crew. Then, armed with new understanding and experience, teachers bring this knowledge back to their classrooms.

NOAA Office of Education Website - NOAA’s Office of Education coordinates education activities across NOAA and oversees the implementation of the NOAA's Education Plan and Policy. These efforts help to ensure that NOAA's education programs and activities are based on NOAA science and support the agency's cross-cutting priority of promoting environmental literacy.
