BBG Research Series: Media Use in Indonesia 2012

Mobile Usage Soars, but TV Still Dominates

On Tuesday, Oct. 16, the Broadcasting Board of Governors (BBG) and Gallup will host the next Research Series briefing on Indonesia Media Use 2012 at 9 a.m., Oct. at Gallup World Headquarters in Washington.

The BBG and Gallup will discuss new findings about media consumption habits in Indonesia, including the increasing role of mobile phones, the embrace of new media among young people, the impact of Facebook, and the digital divide in Internet use.

The growth of mobile in Indonesia is impressive – 81% now say they have a mobile phone in their household, up from two-thirds (67%) in 2011.  Mobile phones have also become essential sources of information access; 50% of Indonesians say they use SMS/text messages to get news at least weekly.  Overall, 21% of Indonesians say they’ve gone online in the past week, and the young are leading the way in Internet use. However, a clear digital divide has emerged based on levels of education.  Despite the upward trend in mobile and Internet use, television remains the dominant news source in Indonesia. The panel will explore these findings and other data from the new research from Indonesia.

Speakers will include:

  • Chris Stewart, Senior Managing Consultant, Gallup
  • Bruce Sherman, Director, Office of Strategy and Development, BBG
  • Rajesh Srinivasan, Ph.D., Principal, Gallup
  • William Bell, Research Director, International Broadcasting Bureau

The event will include a presentation of the key findings from the study, as well as a methodological overview and a review of historical media trends in Indonesia.
