Mercury found in water pipe at Camp Lejeune
A water treatment plant aboard Camp Lejeune remains shut down after mercury was discovered in a pipe within the facility.
Camp Lejeune officials said Friday that the a silvery substance, later determined to be non-soluble, elemental mercury, was found in a pipe within the Hadnot Point Treatment Plant, which was taken offline for routine maintenance Sept. 15.
Tests conducted after the discovery showed no mercury detected in the water supply, according to base officials. Officials also said that the drinking water at the North Carolina base is tested every three years for mercury, most recently in May 2012, and none of those tests have detected mercury.
The plant will continue to stay offline until all investigations and repairs have been completed, according to base officials. Areas normally serviced by the Hadnot Point plant are being supplied by the Holcomb Boulevard water treatment plant. Those areas include the Hadnot Point industrial area, Hospital Point, French Creek and Courthouse Bay.
