Tampa business owner sentenced to prison for paying gratuity to ICE agent

TAMPA, FLA. - A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) investigation resulted in the federal sentencing of Orlando Borras, 48, of Tampa, Fla., for offering and paying a gratuity to a public official.

U.S. District Judge James Whittemore sentenced Borras to one year and one day in federal prison, fined him $5,000 and ordered him to perform 100 hours of community service. Borras pleaded guilty on March 31, 2009.

According to court documents, Borras reported a female illegal alien to ICE and asked ICE to deport her from the United States on a priority basis. Subsequently, Borras offered an ICE special agent $5,000 to expedite the woman's removal.

"ICE investigates bribery attempts of our employees very seriously," said Steven J. Mocsary, Special Agent in Charge of the ICE Office of Professional Responsibility in Tampa. "All allegations of bribery are investigated thoroughly and swift enforcement action is taken when appropriate."

This case was investigated by ICE's Office of Professional Responsibility and Office of Investigations in Tampa.

The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Monk.
