Will training be provided?

As a condition of employment, all new criminal investigators will be required to successfully complete approximately 22 weeks of paid enforcement training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) near Brunswick, Ga.

What types of positions are being filled?

Positions will be filled at the GL-7 and GL-9 grade levels.

Who may apply for these positions?

Announcements are open to all U.S. citizens.

What is the salary?

For current salary information, refer to the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s website. See HR tools and resources, salaries and wages, and select Law Enforcement Special Salary Rate and Locality Pay Tables. The tables do not include the 25 percent Law Enforcement Availability Pay (LEAP). Employees are eligible for promotion up to the GS-13 without having to apply again.

Where are the positions located?

HSI criminal investigator positions are located throughout the continental United States, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Hawaii, Guam, and Saipan. However, a large number of criminal investigator positions are in major metropolitan areas and along the U.S. Southwest border.

Do I have to know how to shoot a gun to apply to be an HSI Criminal Investigator?

Prior firearm experience is not required. Every criminal investigator trainee will be provided with extensive training in the carrying and use of firearms.
