The fuels programs are focused on accelerating the adoption of biofuels and blended logistic fuels, and understanding and mitigating the impact of these fuels on naval power systems. The approach is to: understand the chemistry and physical properties of alternative fuels and chemical additives and their effects on the combustion process, combustion byproducts and emissions and chemical degradation; understanding material performance and compatibility with alternative fuels; improving test methods and processes; and working with the Department of Agriculture and Department of Energy to understand the conditions required to assess the dependability and risks associated with biomass feedstock supply to bio-refineries that produce Naval logistic fuels.
