The 2011 TRI preliminary dataset contains the most current TRI data available and reflects toxic chemical releases and pollution prevention activities that occurred at TRI facilities during the 2011 calendar year.

You can use this dataset to find out what TRI-covered toxic chemicals are being produced and used at industrial facilities in your local area and how they are being managed. Please note that this dataset will change as the TRI Program continues to process TRI submissions.

The TRI Program provides this dataset annually in late July to give the public an opportunity to see the most recent TRI information prior to the publication of the TRI National Analysis report in December. To view National Analysis reports from previous years, please visit the National Analysis homepage.

Tools for Finding 2011 TRI Data

The preliminary dataset is available through Envirofacts and in downloadable data files. Please note that use of the downloadable files is recommended for more experienced TRI data users.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2011 preliminary dataset complete?

The dataset is not complete but currently includes all of the 2011 TRI forms received and processed by EPA as of approximately July 18, 2012. We plan to update the dataset in August and September to capture late reports and revisions. The complete 2011 dataset will be available in October and will be used to conduct the 2011 TRI National Analysis, scheduled for publication in December 2012.

Did EPA collect any new TRI data for the 2011 reporting year?
  • 16 new chemicals were added to the TRI chemical list for 2011.
  • Section 6.1 of the Reporting Form R - Discharges to Publicly-Owned Treatment Works (POTWs) - was changed to allow facilities to identify the chemical quantity sent to each individual POTW listed in Section 6.1.
  • The 2011 Reporting Form R contains a new optional section - 9.1- that allows facilities to submit any miscellaneous information about their TRI data.
  • This year, the TRI Program provided facilities with additional training on completing the pollution prevention (P2) sections of the Form R and enhanced the TRI-MEweb online reporting application to make it easier for facility reporters to provide optional information on P2 and other topics.
When will the 2011 TRI data be available in the other online TRI tools, such as TRI Explorer, myRTK and TRI.NET?

The TRI tools will be released sequentially as soon as they are updated with the 2011 data, beginning with TRI Explorer in September. An announcement about the availability of the online tools will appear on the TRI homepage and TRI listserv subscribers will also be notified via email.

Does the absence of 2011 data for a particular facility mean that the facility is out of compliance with TRI reporting requirements?

No, the absence of 2011 data for a facility is not necessarily an indication that the facility is out of compliance. As in every reporting year, EPA undertakes a number of activities to ensure that facilities are meeting their TRI reporting requirements and to verify the quality of the data received. This process is ongoing. When necessary, EPA's Office of Enforcement and Compliance Assurance may take action to ensure compliance with TRI reporting requirements. Compliance resources include inspectors and attorneys in each of EPA's ten regional offices and at EPA Headquarters.

Have any data quality checks been performed on the data?

The majority of the 2011 TRI data were submitted by facilities using the TRI-MEweb online reporting application, which includes a number of automated data quality checks. We are now in the process of conducting more detailed data quality checks. If data quality errors are detected in a facility's original 2011 TRI submission, the facility may submit a revised 2011 report.

Example Search Using Envirofacts

2011 TRI data are available through the five Envirofacts searches indicated in the box above. The Envirofacts website has more information about how to use each search option. Below is an example that uses the basic Envirofacts TRI search tool to find 2011 data.

Question: The ABC Plastics Corporation is located within one mile of my house. What toxic chemicals is this facility releasing into the environment?

Method: Use the Envirofacts TRI Search

  1. Enter your zip code or city/county and state in the "geography search" section and click "search" at the bottom of the page.

  2. On the results page, look at the "facility name" column of the results table to see if "ABC Plastics Corporation" is listed.

  3. The results screen shows that ABC Plastics has reported to the TRI Program. (Note: if the facility you're looking for doesn't appear in the search results, please see the note at the end of this section.). Click on the number shown in the "submissions" column to see if this facility reported TRI data for the 2011 calendar year.

  4. The next screen lists all of ABC Plastics Corporation's TRI reporting forms since 1987, one form for each chemical for each year. The facility's 2011 TRI reporting forms (if any were submitted) will be listed at the top of the page under the heading: "List of Document Control Numbers in ENVIROFACTS for the TRI Reporting Year: 2011." The results show that ABC Plastics submitted three TRI forms for 2011. Click on the document control number to the left of each chemical name to learn more about how it was managed at the facility, including whether or not the chemical was released to the environment.

  5. The images below show the benzene data from the Reporting Form R that ABC Plastics submitted for 2011. Section 5.2 shows that ABC Plastics reported releasing 1,314 pounds of benzene into the air during 2011.

  6. Further down in Section 6.2, the report shows that ABC Plastics sent 17 pounds of benzene to another facility to be incinerated.

Note: TRI data only reflect TRI submissions received by EPA from facilities that meet TRI reporting requirements. Other facilities in your area may be releasing toxic chemicals but either weren't required to report to the TRI Program or haven't yet submitted their 2011 data. In addition, a TRI facility may be managing a toxic chemical for which the TRI reporting threshold wasn't exceeded, resulting in that chemical not being reported to the TRI Program.
