Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) Contained in Colorado

The Colorado Department of Agriculture’s State Veterinarian’s office has released a number of quarantine and hold orders associated with the recent spread of Equine Herpesvirus (EHV-1) in the state; the disease is considered contained within Colorado and no new cases have been confirmed since May 20, 2011.

“I’m proud of the coordinated effort by the horse industry, veterinarians, event coordinators, and our office. Without the proactive collaboration of all involved, this disease could have had an even greater negative impact on Colorado’s horse industry,” said State Veterinarian, Dr. Keith Roehr.

As of 6/22/2011:

Colorado had 9 confirmed cases of horses with EHV-1.

Two horses, which tested positive for EHV-1, were euthanized after showing severe neurological signs associated with the disease.

There are currently no suspect cases.

Two facilities remain under quarantine or a hold order but those facilities are on track to be released soon.

What‘s an Entry Permit?
06/23/11 Colorado will be requiring entry permits through at least July 8th. It’s easy to receive a permit and the owner, hauler or veterinarian can call for one. It does not take the place of a health certificate issued by an accredited veterinarian. It takes about a minute to obtain if you have all of the following information available. We have a large number of calls coming for permits so please be prepared and have the issued health certificate in front of you when you call. We will need:
1. Reason for travel into Colorado
2. Physical address in Colorado where horses will be located
3. Owners Name
4. Facility Name/Trailhead/Show/Rodeo 5. Phone number for owner/ranch name/facility while in Colorado
6. If someone other than the owner is hauling/transporting the horses we will need their name and contact information
7. Originating City and State
8. Date of Trip
9. How many horses
Please call 303.239.4161 to get a permit. We are available Monday through Friday from 8 am to 5pm, to issue you a permit immediately. If you need a permit after-hours or on weekends please dial 303.239.4159 for the permit line. You’ll need to record the required information as noted above on the message line in order to get a permit. Please speak clearly and slowly and give all required information.
