We "think, act, teach, and train" across the spectrum of international conflict prevention, management, and resolution, and we help societies in the period of post-conflict stabilization.
The United States Institute of Peace is a change agent -- a catalyst for empowering others to prevent, manage and resolve international conflict without resorting to violence. USIP leverages resources and skills for peacebuilding. We develop the research, analysis, educational tools and understanding of international conflicts and then apply models and lessons learned in conflict zones around the world.
USIP is professionalizing the field of international conflict management, educating and training others, applying innovative tools in the field, convening experts, supporting policymakers and providing public education around issues of war and peacebuilding.
We have developed networks of local conflict management facilitators in zones of conflict such as Iraq and Afghanistan. We provide grants and fellowship in the Muslim world, the Balkans, Europe and Russia, the Middle East, the Western Hemisphere, and Africa. We focus on cross-cultural negotiations, rule of law, religion, gender, civil-military cooperation and economies in fragile states. We have active programs on media, technology, science and peacebuilding, as well as dynamic computer-facilitated simulations of conflict management techniques.
Think
We generate research and analysis of international conflicts through our programs, grants, and fellows. We identify best practices and develop conflict management strategies and capacities.
Act
We leverage expertise from decades of working in conflict zones to prevent conflict, manage it where it occurs, and aid in the transition from war to peace by using tools and approaches on the ground.
Teach
USIP's "Academy for International Conflict Management and Peacebuilding" is preparing practitioners to work effectively in conflict zones abroad. Through our courses, distance learning, educational outreach, like the National Peace Essay Contest. USIP has a strong educational focus on students, professionals and the public.
Train
We train practitioners and those in conflict zones on how to use tools and approaches to conflict prevention and management. Through our training programs, our Academy and our computer simulations, we provide innovative strategies and practical skills.
