Burton, Marion Police Meet During Police Week
WASHINGTON, D.C. - Yesterday, Rep. Dan Burton (R-IN) met with the City of Marion Police Department Honor Guard during their visit to Washington, D.C., to participate in Police Week and honor Peace Officers Memorial Day (photos below). After the meeting, Rep. Burton gave the following remarks:
"I really appreciate the Marion police officers traveling to Washington, D.C., to represent law enforcement officers not just in Marion, but across the state of Indiana. They risk their lives to protect us on a daily basis, and Police Week along with Peace Officers Memorial Day is recognition of the selfless acts of the men and women in law enforcement as well as a tribute to all the heroes who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty."
Information on Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day:
Public Law 87-726 designates May 15th of each year as Peace Officers Memorial Day, and Police Week is commemorated during the calendar week containing May 15.
On February 25, 2009, the U.S. House voted 421-0 to approve H. Res. 47, which expressed support for the goals of Peace Officer Memorial Day to honor federal, state, and local police officers killed or disabled in the line of duty, and calls on the people of the United States to observe the day with appropriate ceremonies and respect.
Rep. Burton was one of 14 original co-sponsors of House Resolution 47.
