Will Walter White was born in Bozeman, Mont., in 1900. He graduated from Fergus County High School at Lewistown, in 1917, and joined the U.S. Army in September 1918 as a member of the Student Army Training Corps at the University of Montana. He entered the U.S. Military Academy in July 1919, graduated in June 1923, and was commissioned a second Lieutenant in the Air Service of the Regular Army.
Entering Primary Flying School at Brooks Field, Texas, that September, General White graduated from Advanced Flying School at Kelly Field, Texas, a year later and returned to Brooks Field as a flying instructor. After he graduated from the Air Corps Engineering School at McCook Field, Ohio, in June 1927, he was assigned to the Flight Test Section there.
That September General White was transferred to the U.S. Military Academy as an instructor in the Department of Natural and Experimental Philosophy as engineering officer of the Air Corps Detachment. He was commissioned a first lieutenant on Dec. 13, 1927, and the following June began post graduate study at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology at Cambridge. Receiving his master of science degree in aeronautical engineering in June 1929, he was then assigned to Wright Field, Ohio, as project officer on pursuit and observation Aircraft. Resigning his regular commission Feb. 5, 1930, that April he was commissioned a captain in the Air Corps Reserve.
Returning to the United States upon their entry into World War II, General White was aviation officer in the Petroleum Administration for War (Department of the Interior), that necessitated his resigning his commission as a captain in the Air Corps Reserve March 5, 1942. Duty with the Petroleum Administration included service as liaison officer for the Armed Forces of the United States and Allied Nations and as executive secretary of Aviation Petroleum Products Allocations Committee.
Rejoining INTAVA, Inc., in March 1945, General White went to New York as its president, a subsidiary of the Standard Oil Company of New Jersey, in 1947 and General White was made vice president and director of that company. On Nov. 10, 1948, he was commissioned a colonel in the Air Force Reserve.
Recalled to active duty Feb. 8, 1954, General White was appointed staff director of the petroleum Logistics Division in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of Defense (Supply and Logistics) at Washington, D.C. He was promoted to the rank of brigadier general on April 7, 1954.
General White has been awarded the Italian Commendatore della Corona d'Italia. He is rated a command pilot.
