Wilbur Anderson Smith was born in Camden, N.J., in 1903, the son of the late William Briggs Smith and the late Ada Gertrude Anderson Smith. He has spent the major part of his life as a resident of New Jersey. Through his mother, he is a direct descendant of Colonel John Anderson whose disabled and leaking ship put into Perth Amboy, N.J., in 1699 because it was unable to carry a military expedition back to Scotland. Colonel Anderson became a member of the Provincial Council (New Jersey), later its president and at the time of his death was acting governor of the colony (New Jersey).
This prominent family during the Colonial period always bent its effort toward gaining freedom and then maintaining the new government. General Smith's ancestors fought in the revolution and every major conflict participated in by the United States.
General Smith has been an instructor of medicine at the School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. He was on the visiting and teaching staff of the Pennsylvania Hospital during 1931 - 1937 and the visiting staff of the Methodist Episcopal Hospital in Philadelphia during 1931 - 1942.
He is a rated flight surgeon and was an aviation observer (medical) when it was current. General Smith is at present a special invitation lecturer, aviation medicine, Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania.
General Smith's father was a merchant and owned a business in Philadelphia, Pa.
